Christopher does not hate the society but he simply cannot settle among other people and for him human society could never match the perfection of the nature. From the movie we can conclude that Christopher shared many opinions on the importance of the nature with Byron. However, he did not share his views on society.

Lord Byron believed that society can be fixed; he believed there is hope for human kind. Chris, on the other hand, considered society to be sick and poisened. This contrariety between finding peace in the society and in the nature is the main theme of the movie. Byron's quote is the starting point for the elaboration of two ideologies.
